Spring is just around the corner, and if you live in a cold climate like I do, you will realize that car owners will be anxious to get their prized possessions out of storage and onto the open road. With a new season comes new opportunities to photograph. It’s a perfect time to review tips for successfully light painting a car for a successful photoshoot.

I visited Peggy’s Cove a few weeks ago, which was my first time being there in years. It was a brief visit, but I saw the changes since my last time there. Our last few weeks have been somewhat gloomy, and the sun had rarely appeared, but this night, the forecast called for clear skies. I knew it would still be quite cold with the wind around the lighthouse, which is typical.

As photographers, we can focus on the result more than the experience. We can research our destinations, looking for the “best” place to get the “best” photographs. Learning more about our destination is a logical and appropriate step to learn more about what to expect and what to hope to experience when we arrive, but focusing on the experience should be the point.

Today, Fujifilm announced the X100VI, replacing the X100V, the hugely popular camera model that became a social media legend. As more people embraced the exceptional camera and did so quickly, it sold out everywhere, and prices for second-hand examples were sometimes double the value of a new model. People were paying massive amounts to get their hands on an X100V.

Having experience with the 35mm f/2, I believe the 23mm f/2 fits well with what I like about a lens: compactness. I like small, discreet lenses, and I wanted something wider than the 35mm that would still fit the bill. I was considering one of two wider lenses, the 16mm f/1.4 and the 18mm f/1.4. After testing both, I found they were too wide, a bit larger than I hoped, and ultimately too expensive.

I often discuss the allure of travelling as experiencing new areas hugely benefits well-being and self-development. I try to travel frequently and take advantage of every opportunity, but exploring doesn’t have to be limited to somewhere far from home.

Flying out of Halifax across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe can be inconvenient for people who are unaware, and desperately so if doing it during the winter months. Leaving Halifax, we often need to travel west for a connecting flight to fly east to our final destination. That adds a significant amount of time to the total flight time. That may include flying from Halifax to Toronto, Montreal, or sometimes Newark, but all those connections easily add four to five hours of flight time.

There are many reasons why people buy cars, as they mean different things to different people. Some consider cars utilitarian, a machine that can transport people from one place to another. To others, they can be regarded as art pieces, much more than only a means of transportation. I work with several car dealerships locally. During the warmer months, I can take the vehicles off-site for photo shoots around the city utilizing various backgrounds and lighting conditions. Sometimes, this is the only option as some vehicles are limited, some are new arrivals, and many are in high demand. That means keeping the kilometres low.

My adoration of Fujifilm’s X-E series started with the X-E2 almost a decade ago. I used it as my secondary camera during travel, with the Canon 5D Mark II as my primary. The X-E2 was a fine choice when I didn’t want to use a larger, heavier, more obvious camera. I still have favourites from that camera.
