When light painting a car, multiple exposures that light different portions of the car are needed. The number of exposures will vary depending on the desired look. Still, you usually look at five to six exposures as a minimum, including the side, front (or back), and top. It would be best to capture separate exposures of the wheels, headlights (or tail lights), and the interior. Again, this all comes down to what look you are going for.

A car dealership needs to have photos of the cars they sell. They need to advertise what they offer and want their customers to see what they are shopping for in detail. If you are interested in working with car dealerships, you have probably noticed that they already have plenty of photos. These are usually standard photos of the same angles with the same backgrounds (sometimes poorly Photoshopped) and repeated for every car they have in stock.

On Saturday, I spent about an hour walking around downtown Halifax, capturing street photos as part of my HFX Street project. I primarily focused on Queen’s Marque, located at the Halifax Harbour. Queen’s Marque is a new public space that had its grand opening about a year ago. The $200 million investment includes a lovely waterfront walking area surrounded by new retail and commercial, restaurants, and a boutique hotel.

Lisa and I have been travelling together for ten years now. Our first real trip together was to London and Paris back in 2012. Since then, we have travelled together to the United States and have returned to Europe multiple times. We enjoyed each one we visited, and with all the destinations, I enjoyed capturing the cities and experiencing the destinations. When we returned home, we immediately thought about how great it was and began discussing the next trip.

When you’re travelling, it can be challenging to know when to shoot. You want to ensure you have the time to get the perfect shot, but you don’t want to miss out on other opportunities or plans. I travel for pleasure and the experience I share with Lisa, but I love to capture the cities I travel to as best as possible, considering my limited time and the awareness that I am usually there to enjoy a vacation.

Travelling somewhere new is one of the most exciting things you can experience. When I travel to a new place, I do five things as I get closer to the departure date to prepare and maximize my limited time there. Reading up on where you are going is necessary to know what you want to do and what you want to see. Along with general Googling of the destination, I frequent a few sites to help me choose restaurants, sites, and neighbourhoods to stay in.

After using a combination of the Canon 5D Mark II and Fujifilm X-E2 along with two or three lenses for travel, I decided I needed to cut down on gear as it was becoming a challenge. Carrying around a bunch of gear is tiresome, and having the choice of what camera or lens to use made me sometimes think too long before taking the shot.

Car light painting can seem like a very involved process with significant investments in equipment, and it can be! No matter what type of photography you are into, you can spend considerable money on your gear. But the truth is, you can start your light painting journey with probably the camera you have, a tripod, and a light source. However, investing in a quality tripod and separate ball head is recommended.

You are tasked with photographing a vehicle and have either been given specific direction from the client, or they have allowed you to do what you think "will look the best." It's common for clients to leave it up to you to capture their car because, after all, they like what you do. They got in touch with you for a reason. My car photography shoots are conducted by myself, so the recommendations below focus on solo photo shoots only.

Lisbon is the capital city and the largest in Portugal. It is the second oldest European capital after Athens, Greece. Exploring Lisbon will take you through numerous neighbourhoods ranging from lively shopping and nightlife districts to older, more scenic areas. I travelled to Lisbon for a few days this month to explore, enjoy, and photograph the city. I spent three days exploring the top spots in the city, including Baixa, Rossio, Bairro Alto, and Alfama.

Porto is the second largest city in Portugal after Lisbon, and in recent years, it has been recognized as one of the top destinations to visit in Europe. The core area of Porto is relatively compact and similar to Lisbon, consisting of many hills, alleys, etc. It doesn’t take long to explore Porto, and it’s easy to see most of the city in two full days.

I am not a professional travel photographer, but I like to travel. And when I do, I like to take photos. I never really started to travel much until around 2012-2013, which was pretty late for me as I was in my early 30s. I try to travel at least twice yearly, consistent until 2020. In May of that year, a Scotland trip was scheduled with flights booked and daily plans noted, but unfortunately, we had to cancel.
